چکیده

The distribution of item generation/time in the performance of elderly on verbal fluency (VF) remains unknown. Objective: To analyze the number of items, their distribution and impact of the first quartile on the final test result. Methods: 31 individuals performed the tests (average age=74 years; schooling=8.16 years). Results: The number of items produced in the first quartile differed from the other quartiles for both semantic and phonologic VF where 40% of items were produced in the first quartile. No effect of age was found and schooling influenced performance on the first and second quartiles of semantic VF and on the 1, 2 and 3 quartiles of phonemic VF. Discussion: This study contributes with the finding that asymptotic levels are attained prior to the 30 seconds observed in other studies, being reached at the 15-second mark. Furthermore, schooling was found to be associated to the number of items produced in both the first and 2 quartiles for semantic VF, and in 1, 2 and 3 quartiles for phonemic fluency. Conclusion: The schooling effect was noted both in semantic and executive aspects of VF. The brief form of the VF test may represent a promising tool for clinical evaluation.

An item/order trade-off explanation of word length and generation effects.

The item-order hypothesis suggests that under certain conditions increased item processing can lead to deficits in order processing, and that this produces a dissociation in performance between item and order tasks. The generation effect is one such example. The word length effect is seen as another instance where this trade-off might be observed. The following experiments compare word length a...

Design controversies and the generation effect: support for an item-order hypothesis.

We performed three experiments to investigate an earlier finding of Nairne, Riegler, and Serra (1991) that item generation disrupts the long-term retention of serial order. Experiment 1 demonstrated a clear advantage of reading over generating on a reconstruction test when reading and generating occurred in pure, but not mixed, lists. Experiment 2 showed that the standard generate advantage is ...

Effect of Chlorhexidine on Micro-Shear Bond Strength of Two Adhesive Systems After Aging

Background and Aim: Recurrent caries and low bond strength are the main causes of composite restorations failure. This study sought to assess the effect of chlorhexidine (CHX) on micro-shear bond strength (MSBS) to dentin of a fourth generation adhesive system and a universal bonding agent after aging. Materials and Methods: This in vitro study used 32 extracted third molars and 3-5mm thick de...
